Claude
A family of large language models built by Anthropic with a focus on safety, long context, and tool use; powers Claude.ai and the Claude Code agent.
Claude is the large language model family built by Anthropic, an AI safety company founded in 2021 by former members of OpenAI. The first Claude model launched in early 2023 and the line has since grown through Claude 2, the Claude 3 family (Haiku, Sonnet, Opus), Claude 3.5 and 3.7 Sonnet, and the Claude 4 generation that includes Sonnet, Opus, and an extended-context variant.
Claude is positioned around three themes: safety, with training methods such as Constitutional AI and rigorous red-teaming; long context, with windows up to one million tokens; and agentic capability, including reliable tool use, code execution, and computer-use abilities. Claude is exposed through Claude.ai, the Anthropic API, AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and the Claude Code developer CLI.
Anthropic also authored the Model Context Protocol — an open standard for connecting AI models to external tools and data — which has been adopted across many other AI agents and IDEs.
Claude is one of the three frontier-grade Western LLM families alongside OpenAI’s GPT and Google’s Gemini and is widely covered on this site as a benchmark for safety-oriented capability.
