Apple steps out in front of the academic community

On April 10, Apple Machine Learning Research announced that it will participate in ACM CHI 2026 — the world’s most important conference for Human-Computer Interaction, which this year is being held in Barcelona from April 13 to 17.

ACM CHI has traditionally been the place where the biggest ideas about the future of human-technology interaction are presented and debated.

Why is Apple’s participation important?

Apple has traditionally been relatively quiet in the academic community compared to Google, Meta, and Microsoft. But in the last few years:

• The Apple Machine Learning Research blog has become increasingly active
• Apple silicon (the M series) opens up the possibility of local AI
• The MLX framework is an open-source ML library for Apple silicon
• Apple Intelligence integrates AI deeply into the operating system

Participation in CHI 2026 is part of that broader strategy: Apple does not want to be a “black box” in the AI world, it wants to be a partner to the academic community.

Although Apple has not announced all the details about specific papers, at CHI conferences research is typically presented in the areas of:
